Oliver Twist

Abandoned at an early age, Oliver Twist is forced to live in a dark and dismal London workhouse lorded over by awful Mr. Bumble who cheats the boys of their meager rations! Desperate but determined, Oliver makes his escape. But what he discovers in the harsh streets of London’s underworld makes the workhouse look like a picnic. Penniless and alone, he is lured into a world of crime by the wily Fagin — the nefarious mastermind of a gang of pint-sized pickpockets.
Will a life of crime pay off for young Oliver? Or will it earn him a one-way ticket to the gallows?

I have learned about Oliver Twist on many occasions

Too old fashioned. I've always been hearing about this book, and that it's great and all . But when I read it myself, even thought I knew it was a classic, therefore based in older times, I found in all most every third word was a word I did not understand, or a word infrequently used in modern day to day life.

Rather complicated language, it was difficult to follow sometimes

I don't know; I really don't know,' said Giles, with a rueful countenance. 'I couldn't swear to him.'
    'What do you think?'

When ladies as young, and good, and beautiful as you are,' replied the girl steadily, 'give away your hearts, love will carry you all lengths-even such as you, who have home, friends, other admirers, everything, to fill them. When such as I, who have no certain roof but the coffinlid, and no friend in sickness or death but the hospital nurse, set our rotten hearts on any man, and let him fill the place that has been a blank through all our wretched lives, who can hope to cure us? Pity us, lady-pity us for having only one feeling of the woman left, and for having that turned, by a heavy judgment, from a comfort and a pride, into a new means of violence and suffering.'

Such is the influence which the condition of our own thoughts, exercise, even over the appearance of external objects. Men who look on nature, and their fellow-men, and cry that all is dark and gloomy, are in the right; but the sombre colours are reflections from their own jaundiced eyes and hearts. The real hues are delicate, and need a clearer vision
