Personal Storytelling: Discovering the Extraordinary In the Ordinary

    Elina Nikolaevaцитирует9 месяцев назад
We “get” stories. Stories stick with us. Why is this? From a psychological perspective, human beings are fundamentally “meaning making machines” and stories are a powerful way to make meaning from our experiences and to convey meaning to others.

Building an autobiography is also a reminder to continue challenging ourselves and build on our experiences.

I firmly believe that the saying “Everyone’s life is an autobiography…but you need to make yours worth reading.” describes how a combination of one’s experiences creates one’s autobiography.

Appreciation is a way of life where you build on the curiosity and attach significance to it.

Whatever stopped you to think deeper, perspective adds dimension and elements to it. Your perspectives help you create unique purpose or meaning and others may interpret the same meaning or purpose very differently.

I often advise university students that if there is a job they want, a career they want to pursue or a company they envision themselves becoming a part of, they are on a crash course to accomplish this as long as they don’t limit themselves

Their perspective had changed; they realized nobody was going to swoop in to rescue them. Instead of waiting for a rescuer, they needed to find enablers and champions to help them get where they needed to go.

Anything worth pursuing in life means being persistent and overcoming obstacles; it is also about focusing your attention to the task at hand and seeing actions through to completion

I have built the ability to remain calm and reflective. Like a yogi master who is able to bend and move, I trained my mind to remain calm and collected rather than reactive and abrupt. We encounter a multitude of experiences every day and often view them in absolutes. When something happens, we often tell ourselves that it is good or bad and our experiences are shaped by the position we take. By dealing in absolutes, we take an immediate position and build from this perspective rather than considering the situation and assessing the impacts and possibilities.

If curiosity is the start of story building, appreciation is the next step. Once something has been identified as interesting or out of the ordinary, you need to appreciate it for more than the obvious. Appreciation is looking at something in a different light and then accepting it for more than what it’s perceived worth is. It is an expression of gratitude for a person, situation or object. If curiosity sparked my conversation with a complete stranger on the train, appreciation is what took it further.

Without knowing it, our lives changed drastically in a matter of seconds. Life is precious, time is precious and you must be sure to use it wisely. I realized at a very young age that there are no guarantees in life and since then, walking out every morning, I treasure and embrace anything and everything because I am not sure when it will be over for me. This is not a morbid thought but one of finding purpose and meaning and this became my foundation of appreciation.

This is the beginning of a new day. You have been given this day to use as you will. You can waste it or use it for good. What you do today is important because you are exchanging a day of your life for it… A DAY OF YOUR LIFE… When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever; in its place is something that you have left behind… let it be something good.”

Every morning, I have a choice, and I tell myself that I will appreciate all that the day holds because I have no idea when it will end. I am grateful for the extraordinary in the ordinary.

There is greatness in ‘pushing at the edges’ of what you know yourself to be capable of. If you're not failing, you're probably playing small. If you have failures on a regular basis, you're playing in the ever-expanding boundary area of what you're capable of as a human being. Too many people “play small” in life, which is really too bad.
